We are very happy to have you worship with us or visit the various activities of our Church throughout the week. Our History The Church was gathered as a congregation on March 9th 1924 by 24 visionary persons of faith under the name Langley Avenue Congregational Church. In 1926 it became the Michigan Avenue Congregational Church. In November 1928, the congregation purchased the present edifice and became what we are known today. We are and African American Congregational Church of the United Church of Christ. The UCC is a union of four denominations (Christian, Reformed, Congregational & Evangelical) founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1957. The Church of the Good Shepherd in an inclusive Church with a metropolitan membership. It has provided distinguished leadership through civic, political, judicial, cultural and educational channels. many of our members have served in prominent, high profile positions in the city and state. The Church has always been a socially active Church as an expression of personal faith. The brightness continues in this our 80th year. Worship & Study It is our belief that worship and study of God's Word are the central task of the Church. The following offer the opportunity to do such: Sunday Worship 11:00-12:15pm (Fellowship Hour immediately following) *Communion is Observed every First Sunday* Church School 9:30-10:30am Adult Bible Study 9:30-10:30am Bible Study Opportunities Wednesday Evenings 6:30pm-8:00pm Wednesday Afternoon 12:00noon-1:00pm Sunday Mornings 9:30-10:30am Additional Study Sessions are provided during Advent and Lenten Seasons. The ministerial staff is always open to additional worship and study wishes. Special Annual Events Lenten Series - 6 weeks before Easter All Church Easter Tea - Easter Sunday Annual Health Fair - Summer Homecoming Sunday - September Women & Men's Retreat - September Opportunities Within COGS is not just open on Sunday Mornings! We are open all day, every day with programs and meeting scheduled, or to just stop by. We are a seven-day-a-week church with a multitude of programs, activities and opportunities. Below is a brief listing: Women's Clubs - Moentitas, Women's Fellowship, Friends Club, Service League, TNT Club, Flower Guild Children & Youth - Church School, Youth Ministry Men's Clubs - The Men's Club Co-ed Clubs & Ministries - Adult Fellowship Alpha Fellowship, Black history library, Bowling League, Couples Club, Day Care Auxiliary, Founders Club, Good Shepherd Seniors, Kenneth B. Smith, Christian Education, Tape Ministry, Telephone Ministry Musical Groups - Chancel Choir, Youth Choir, Handbell Choir, Children's Chior Boards - The Diaconare, Usher Board, Stewardship & Benevolence, Christian Education, Evangelism & Recruitment, Trustees, Social Action Board, Day Care Board Others - Easter Tea Committee, Credit Union, Golden Diners, Birthday Groups Outreach & Missions Certified Community Day Care Center on Site Free Children's Clinic (with the University of Chicago) Supporting member, United Church of Christ Supporting Member, Community Renewal Society Life Member of the NAACP Unified Delinquency/Intervention Services (UDIS) for troubled youth Clothing Pantry Senior Citizens Nutritional Program Mental Health Program (in development) George Andrew's Foundation Scholarship for students pursuing Music Credit Union (Church members eligible) 124 Acre Campsite in Idlewild, Michigan Community Development Good Shepherd has sponsored 220 units of new housing and rehabilitated 46 units from 1980 to the present. We are proud of the contribution and performance of the following three corporations Good Shepherd has formed to this end: Good Shepherd Land and Housing Corp. Sponsored Good Shepherd Manor at 67th & Stony Island (149 units for seniors) Good Shepherd Homes Corporation Sponsored Good Shepherd Tower at 55th & Wabash (60 units for seniors) Good Shepherd Community Services Corporation - A Venue partner in building Prairie Park, 56 town home units at 55th & Prairie and 56th & Calumet rehabilitated 46 units of rental apartments at 60th & Martin Luther King Drive.
